Examples of how to refer to a chapter in a book with one or more editors

Here are examples of how to refer to a specific chapter inside an edited book. Please note that you’ll need to include the page numbers in the reference list. The last example also shows how to include the edition. (In this case, the seventh edition.)



Referring to a chapter by 1-2 authors in a book with 1 editor

This can be compared to previous results (Turvill, 2021). It has also been discussed by Harlow and Smith (2021).

Referring to a chapter by 3-20 authors in a book with 1 editor

This can be compared to previous results (Brown et al., 2021). It has also been discussed by Brown et al. (2021).

With three or more authors, write only the first author plus "et al.", including the first time.

As stated in the APA Style Guide 7th edition, only write the first author plus "et al." at all times if there are three or more authors.
